A couple of tips I found useful to make swimming more enjoyable.
1) Don't lift your head to breathe. When you lift your head, your legs drop making it hard to make forward progress. The aim of the game is to keep the legs up on top of the water i.e. keep parralel to the pool surface. This is hard. You need to learn to roll your body to breath and push your chest down in the water so your legs "pop" up. It is even harder for skinny runners as the legs don't float very well.
2) Try and keep your hand in front of your face for as long as possible - glide out your hand and hold... before bringing your hand back. You need to learn to relax, however it is tough when your legs are sinking - (see point 1).
That should keep you busy for a few weeks... or months ;-).
Good luck and I may see you down there where we can struggle together!
